About the Band

The Amazons are a British rock band from Reading and formed in 2014. Since then, they have released three albums with their debut album “The Amazons” reaching number 8 in the UK Albums Chart in 2016.

The following year, they were named THE band to listen to by NME, The Independent & BBC Radio 1.

Since then, their following albums “Future Dust” & “How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me?” placed 9^th & 5^th in the UK Album Charts respectively.

So, it’s safe to say that these guys are certifiably rockin’ it and are specialists in their field.The band comprises of:

Matt Thompson – Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar

Shris Alderton – Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals

Elliot Briggs – Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals

And recently departed Drummer, Joe Emmett

The band has grown quite a following over the recent years and definitely hold a strong place in rock fans hearts. Their style is a blend of Alternative/Indie Rock but I can definitely hear a lot of Classic Rock & Hard Rock influences in their music.

Personally, I think this combination of old & new age rock music is beautifully blended in the bands music and is the perfect bridge to bring all types of Rock-Music lovers together.

In My Mind is currently the bands second most streamed track (18/12/2023: 13,914,627) on Spotify. It has been a cornerstone of their music with their two most streamed tracks both being from their first album out of three.

Why it’s our Hottest Record

I first heard In My Mind one night driving home from Lincoln city listening to the Daniel P Carter Rock show on BBC Radio One.

After hearing the track I listened so intently to the radio to heart the band and track name. I think it was only couple of months later that I had bought tickets to see them at the Bodega in Nottingham on the 10^th March 2017.

The Amazons made their why to my ears at a time when Indie Rock was soundtracking my college days. It was the perfect addition to my playlist along with bands like Catfish & The Bottlemen, Blossoms, Viola Beach & The Kooks.

I think if we are going to select a track from the Amazons it’s a no brainer. It was my gateway single into discovering their debut album & previous EP with some pretty nostalgic track on there.

Since then, I’ve listened to every single album as soon as it was released and truly think that this band is going to be around for a while.

Oh, and we also love it because they released a really good acoustic version of this song which I can never decide which one is my favourite! Both are in our Track of the Week playlist!

The Record Broken Down

One reason I love this song is because it really gets deep into some emotions which I would imagine a lot of people have felt as it could be quite a common situation to find yourself in.

It’s a story about not being the good guy in a relationship where in his mind, he has already broken up with her. The stress, guilt and indecisiveness of a situation that you know you don’t want to be in but seem to be unable to get out of can take it’s toll and wears your strength away which is described in the opening verse.

Whether it’s for the fear of being alone and the fear of starting over we might stay in our current situation despite it being against our gut feelings and also when it’s not the right thing to do.

It’s hard to make that decision and a lot of the time we go for the easy option and end up crawling back when it’s unfair for both halves.

The Amazons Tour - Elliot Briggs on Bass

This song’s lyrics are raw, emotionally charged and definitely hold some truth. After the song was released, Matt had quite a comical story which he said in an interview with the BBC:

"There are about two or three different girls who've said they think it's about them, which is terrible. It does not paint a good picture of me. And you know what? Maybe they all have a case."

So, a true rock’n’roll track which power chords and heavy guitar riffs paired with great lyrics and meaning. It would be rude not to make this our track of the week!
